Los Angeles city officials have released animations of the entries for the 6th Street Viaduct Replacement Project competition. The winning entry, which ARCHITECT mentioned last week, was designed by a team led by HNTB, collaborating with Michael Maltzan Architecture and AC Martin Partners. AECOM and Parsons Brinckerhoff led the other finalist teams in the competition to design a replacement for the 6th Street Viaduct, a historic bridge over the Los Angeles River that engineers fear would succumb to liquefication in a major earthquake.

The HNTB-led team’s entry animation shows fly-over views of the bridge in its digitally-rendered context, highlighting pedestrian passages over, under, and through the future structure. The City of Los Angeles hopes to open the new bridge, funded in large part with federal highway monies, in 2019, which should dovetail nicely with the city’s plans for Union Station.

The 6th Street Viaduct Replacement Project also released a video in which Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa explains that the bridge connects the central core of Los Angeles to the East Side:
