Who is the greenest of them all? According to Newsweek magazine’s latest Green Rankings, technology giant Hewlett-Packard tops the list. Ranking American companies by their impact on the environment, Newsweek, in association with Trucost, a global provider of environmental data and analysis, ranked the top 500 companies based on their resource use and emissions, policies and strategies, and reputation among peers. The master list of the country’s top 500 companies was determined according to their revenue, market capitalization, and number of employees.

Hewlett-Packard was recognized for its strong programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Following second was another computer giant, Dell, which ranks forth among the top U.S. corporate users of renewable energy. The company headquarters uses 100 percent renewable energy and all of the company’s desktop and laptop computers will consume up to 25 percent less energy by 2010. Rounding out the top 10 was: Johnson & Johnson; Intel; IBM; State Street; Nike; Bristol-Myers Squibb; Applied Materials; and Starbucks.
