Today the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a museum that will house the personal collection of filmmaker George Lucas, revealed the designs for two potential locations in California. The museum, designed by MAD Architects of Beijing, is proposed for one of two sites, Treasure Island in San Francisco or the Exposition Park in Los Angeles, and the renderings released today visualize both locations.

The California cities have been proposed to host the museum before, but Lucas selected Chicago over the two cities following San Francisco’s rejection of a prior proposal in the beginning stages of the plan. In June of this year, ARCHITECT reported that the plan was also rejected by Chicago due to legal issues with a surrounding park. Now Lucas has returned to the West Coast for consideration. After the Chicago proposal failure, architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne suggests Lucas needs to address not only the mayors of these cities, but the populations as well, so the project can be developed.

Ma Yansong, the founder architect and principal of MAD, is still responsible for the design proposal in both cities. He worked with Lucas for the Chicago proposal and has designed two different 260,000-square-foot Lucas museum proposals for San Francisco and Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Times, Lucas is expected to make a decision on which location he prefers in the coming months.
