One hundred years ago, Walter Gropius founded Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, which became one of the most influential architecture and design schools of the 20th century. To celebrate its centennial, the new Bauhaus-Museum Weimar, designed by Berlin firm Heike Hanada Laboratory of Art and Architecture, will open in Weimar on April 6 and exhibit a 13,000-piece collection in “The Bauhaus Comes From Weimar.” What originally began as Gropius’ 168-item collection established in 1925 has continued to grow long past his death amounting to about 13,000 items today, according to a press release.

The permanent exhibition asks the question “how do we want to coexist?” and will feature work from the 13,000-piece collection by some of Gropius’ contemporaries including Marianne Brandt, Marcel Breuer, Carl Jacob Jucker, Peter Keler, Paul Klee, Lászlo Moholy-Nagy, Mies van der Rohe, and Eberhardt Schrammen.

The Neues Museum, also located in Weimar, will simultaneously present an exhibition titled “Van der Velde, Nietzsche and Modernism Around 1900” which will feature work from modernists including Max Beckman, Claude Monet, and Henry van der Velde.
