Times Square Arts, a public program from the Times Square Alliance in New York City, has announced a collaborative design by New York–based firms Modu and Eric Forman Studio as the winner of its 12th annual Times Square Valentine Heart Design Competition. The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum curated this year’s competition, selecting the mirrored heart from five finalists submissions.

For the “Heart Squared” installation, Modu and Eric Forman Studio will construct a steel-framed structure in the middle of Times Square, creating an anatomical outline of a heart. The designers will position 125 angled mirrors throughout the heart’s frame, reflecting images of visitors and the surroundings. As visitors move around the heart the reflections in the mirrors will shift, eventually “revealing a pixel heart of urban life surrounded by a field of mirrored sky,” according to a press release from Times Square Arts.

Modu and Eric Forman Studio’s heart will go on display Jan. 20 at 11 a.m., between 46th and 47th Streets in Times Square. The heart will remain on view through February in celebration of Valentine’s Day.
