Mexico City Firm Escobedo Solíz Studio Wins the 2016 Young Architects Program

This summer, Mexico City firm Escobedo Solíz Studio will transform the courtyard of MoMA PS1, the Long Island City space of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, as the winner of the 2016 Young Architects Program.

The annual Young Architects Program solicits designs for a courtyard installation to host MoMA PS1’s summertime Warm Up concerts. Selected from five finalists, Escobedo Solíz Studio’s winning design, “Weaving the Courtyard,” includes a canopy of intertwined colored ropes that are mounted from the formwork tie-holes in the courtyard’s concrete walls. The site-specific installation will also include a wading pool. (The competition calls for a shading system, seating, and a water feature to provide comfort during the New York summer months.)

“Escobedo Solíz’s ingenious proposal speaks to both the ephemerality of architectural imagery today but also to the nature of spatial transactions more broadly,” said Sean Anderson, associate curator in MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design, in a press release.

“Weaving the Courtyard” will be the 19th summer installation in the MoMA PS1 courtyard.
