Ma Yansong’s MAD Martian Collection Debuts at Design Miami

Ma Yansong, principal founder of MAD Artchitects, has released his first furniture collection which debuted at Gallery ALL during Design Miami/ in Basel, Switzerland, this week.

Dubbed the MAD Martian Collection, the initial collection includes five pieces: a dining table, console table, chaise lounge chair, floor-to-ceiling suspension lights, and a candelabra. Ma approached this new project with a question in mind, which is “What happens after human beings move to mars?” and “What will we discover when we get there?” according to MAD’s press release.

The collection takes cues from the popular 20^th century theme of science fiction and the 1960s Space Race aesthetic. Its forms, bringing back Ma’s Shanshui City philosophy—that the ideal city of the future will combine the convenience of the modern city with the ancient Eastern affinity for the natural world—show both natural elements and imagined extra-terrestrial environments in what he pictures to be the natural landscape of Mars. The collection is the first in a series commissioned by Gallery ALL that is focusing on Chinese designers and creating a dialogue between Eastern and Western design practices.

The MAD Martian Collection is currently showing at Design Miami/Basel until June 22, and additional pieces will be added to the collection later this year.
