In mid-July, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) jointly awarded the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics to Los Angeles and Tokyo, and left it to the two cities to determine which city would host which year. On Monday, Los Angeles announced its intention to host the 2028 games, leaving the earlier games to Paris. The two cities will be officially awarded the games at the 131st IOC Session in September.

The 2028 Olympics will be the third for Los Angeles, having previously hosted the 1932 and 1984 games. The Jerde Partnership, a local firm founded by architect Jon Jerde, designed the low-budget 1984 games with graphic designer Deborah Sussman. The 2024 Olympics will mark the 100th anniversary of Paris’ first and only Olympics in 1924.
