Following Rafael Viñoly, FAIA’s 20 Fenchurch Street (the Walkie Talkie) last year and Sheppard Robson’s Woolwich Central the year prior, the residential and hospitality complex Lincoln Plaza by London firm BUJ Architects has been selected as the latest recipient of the Carbuncle Cup, an annual program run by Building Design that recognizes the flops in British architecture.
The jury comprised Building Design editor Thomas Lane; Building architecture correspondent Ike Ijeh; Building Design columnist Ben Flatman; and Julian Robinson, the London School of Economics and Political Science’s director of estates.
“When you look at the crazy patterns, pick and mix colours, and gimmicky balconies you can see that it lacks poise, foundation, or clarity of vision,” Robinson said about Lincoln Plaza, according to Building Design. “Its neighbours aren’t great but this is just an unmitigated mess.”
Five other projects were shortlisted for the cup: Saffron Square by Rolfe Judd, the Diamond by Twelve Architects, One Smithfield by RHWL Architects, Poole Methodist Church extension by Intelligent Design Centre, and 5 Broadgate by Make Architects.
