In 1959, one of the most controversial cultural projects in New York at that time opened to the public: the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, or, more casually referred to as just The Guggenheim. Its architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, had unfortunately passed six months prior to the public opening, and had endured pushback from critics believing it would overshadow the art it would display and not provide enough space for them, even prompting some artists to sign a petition protesting their work be featured there. But the design persevered, and later became a catalyst for modern museum designs.
To celebrate both this achievement and the late Wright’s 150th birthday, LEGO has released a a version of the Manhattan art institution, and is the newest addition to its architectural model series. The kit consists of 744 pieces to build the circular concrete rotunda, along with the 10-story limestone tower behind it, and the lettering of the façade. It also includes extra pieces to recreate part of Fifth Avenue, such as yellow pieces for taxis.
