George R. Kravis II, former broadcasting executive and radio station owner of KRAV/KGTO in Tulsa, Okla., has donated a slew of contemporary industrial design objects to the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. Regarded as one of the most robust collections of industrial desigin in the U.S., the items will be the focus of “Energizing the Everyday: Gifts from the George R. Kravis Collection,” an exhibition that will be on view through March 12, 2017. Notable pieces include designer Norman Bel Geddes’s Manhattan cocktail set, designer Cesare Cassati’s and C. Emanuele Ponzio’s Pillola lamps, and artist Olafur Eliasson’s Little Sun solar-powered LED lantern.
