Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi, known for his transparent wire mesh sculptures, has unveiled his latest site-specific installation at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. Dubbed “Etherea,” the installation is the product of the artist’s research in the field of music, following his collaborations with international music festivals, including the 2014 Life is Beautiful urban art festival in Las Vegas; the 2015 Roskilde Music and Arts Festival in Denmark; the 2016 Eaux Claires Festival in Eau Claire, Wis.; and the 2017 Derive Festival in Sapri, Italy.

Inspired by Neoclassical and Baroque architecture styles, “Etherea” is made up of three transparent wire mesh sculptures, identical in shape, that measure 36-, 54-, and 72- feet tall. The artwork “follows a growing experiential path where architecture becomes a tool and place for contemplation, a dedicated space where the sky and clouds are narrated through the language of classical architecture,” according to a press release. “The installation plays on the dualism between the pure and the filtered experiences that intertwine with one another, to eventually leave the man at the center of it all. With a passage from a macro-reality to a restricted one, the human body becomes a key to read, discover, measure, and experience reality, just like architecture itself.”

Since its humble beginnings in 1999, Coachella has grown to become one of the largest music festivals in the world, also offering visitors a chance to experience commissioned installations by numerous artists throughout the festival grounds. “Etherea” and other installations will be on view for two consecutive weekends (April 13-15 and April 20-22) throughout the annual event.
