The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announced today that the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, England, designed by Haworth Tompkins, has won the 2014 RIBA Stirling Prize. The new Everyman Theatre replaces a 19th century building that housed the theater company, itself an institution in Liverpool. The new complex houses a 400-seat auditorium with an adaptable thrust stage as well as rehearsal rooms, workshops, a sound studio, and an educational facility. Movable sunscreens on the exterior shade the building, while thermal mass and ventilation stacks contribute to a BREEAM Excellent rating.
First awarded in 1996, the Stirling Prize, named after British architect James Stirling, is an award that is presented to RIBA-chartered architects for work that they completed either in the United Kingdom or the European Union.
This year’s jury selected six shortlisted projects in July. The jury included Spencer de Grey of Foster + Partners; Stephen Kieran, FAIA, of KieranTimberlake; MJ Long of Long & Kentish; Timothy Sainsbury; and Cindy Walters of Walters & Cohen. RIBA and the BBC conducted a poll to determine a People’s Choice Award, which went, by popular vote, to the Library of Birmingham, designed by Mecanoo.
