The South African–based firm Nico van der Meulen Architects recently completed the Kloof Road House, a Johannesburg home that boasts an impressive view of the house’s sloping gardens from every room.
Using parasitic architecture, the architects utilized steel, glass
and concrete to create a “sculptural piece of architecture that is an extreme
transformation from the previously modest single story,” according to the architect’s description of the project.
The use of these materials is prominently used throughout the house, from the steel boundary wall, to the glass front door, to the poured concrete floors.
The firm’s trademark of connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces is achieved through the use of frameless folding glass doors. The open floor plan of the house allows for natural entertaining at the swimming pool, fire pit, and outdoor kitchen.
The angled columns supporting steel beams and the roof pierce the double volume space. These structural elements were designed to appear sculptural, while the sculptures on display compliment the structural components of the building.
The homeowners also stressed the importance of an energy-efficient home, so the firm incorporated a water-based under floor heating system, connected to solar panels and a heat pump.
The house features four en suite bedrooms, two children’s bedrooms and a guest bedroom, along with the main bedroom suite. Other features include a pajama-lounge, a playroom, and several large balconies.
