Zhao Liang, “Heavy Sleepers,” Walker Art Center

Directed by Zhao Liang, 2006

Exhibit
Zhao Liang, a young Beijing-based artist, combines documentary-filmmaking techniques with those of popular media to comment on the urban realities of today’s China. In the music video–style Bored Youth (2000), for example, he showed an actor running through the remains of a traditional Beijing neighborhood undergoing redevelopment. Heavy Sleepers (2006), a large-scale video environment now at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, depicts the interior of a dormitory for construction workers in the run-up to the 2008 Olympics. A slow camera pan reveals telling details about the laborers’ lives.
