Postcard from Milan: What’s With All the Shoes?

The international design event is dark and crowded and everyone keeps talking about footwear.

Two members of what we’ll call the Global Design Tribe run into each other on the long, glass-canopied catwalk of the Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas’, Hon. FAIA’s, massive Fiera Milano complex, Salone’s bustling headquarters.

“Hey,” says the first, “did you go to the Wallpaper* party last night?”

“Yeah,” the second says, “but it was too dark, so I couldn’t see anyone. Then I went to the Kartell party, where they were doing the Ettore Sottsass-designed, Memphis-tribute collection, but I couldn’t see that either because the line was too long. And then I went to the 80th birthday party for Italian design company Molteni, where they were exhibiting some of their classic chairs by Gio Ponti, but I was only upstairs for a minute before security pushed us out. Then I went to United Nude’s 3D printing show, which was okay but I’m really sick of everything at Salone being about shoes so I walked out pretty much right away, and then I tried to go the Serpenti installation that Zaha Hadid, Hon. FAIA, did with Bulgari, but it had already ended.”

A brief pause.

Then the second asks the first: “So what did you do?”

“The exact same thing.”

“Weird, I didn’t see you,” the second replies.

“Yeah,” says the first. “Weird.”
