‘Contemplating the Void,’ Guggenheim Museum

Frank Lloyd Wright’s curvaceous Guggenheim Museum on New York’s Fifth Avenue turned 50 last year, and what better way to celebrate middle age than to imagine a facelift? The iconic museum invited 200 artists, architects, and designers to consider their ideal interventions for the building’s central space and is exhibiting the proposals in “Contemplating the Void.” With submissions by the likes of Anish Kapoor, MVRDV, and Acconci Studio, the suggestions range from an inverted funnel of red smoke to a giant rock-climbing wall, as well as more-whimsical offerings, like Doug Aitken’s Untitled. No need to panic, Wright enthusiasts: The interventions will remain purely theoretical.
