At the end of August, Barry Bergdoll will be stepping down as the chief architecture curator for the Museum of Modern Art. But he isn’t leaving MoMA altogether.
Bergdoll, who has been on an extended leave of absence from Columbia University since 2007—which is when he arrived at the museum—is heading back into the fold. In September, he is returning at the university’s request to full-time teaching and research. The university has named him the Meyer Shapiro Chair of Art History and Archaeology (Modern Architectural History).
At the end of August, Bergdoll will no longer serve as MoMA’s Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design. But he will continue to serve as a part-time curator in that department working on select projects. In the near future, Bergdoll will continue to work on a forthcoming exhibition at MoMA on Latin American architecture from 1955 to 1985, a show scheduled for 2015.
