Architecten De Vylder Vinck Taillieu, a Belgian architecture firm participating in the Chicago Architecture Biennial this October, wants you to play a solo game of tennis against the side of an architectural site. As part of its project for what’s being billed as North America’s largest international survey of contemporary architecture, the firm has issued an open call for participants worldwide to record a video of the bouncing ball hitting their chosen site’s exterior. The player should be out of the camera’s view, and the footage should run for about 30 seconds.
The firm’s co-founders, Jan De Vylder, Inge Vinck, and Jo Taillieu, came up with “The Tennis Re-Enactment” when they noticed people playing tennis with a public pavilion designed by the late Portuguese architect Fernando Távora, at the Quinta da Conceição park in Porto, Portugal. By focusing on such a simple activity, the firm wants to draw attention to the ways in which everyday life affects the lifespan of architecture—landmarks or otherwise.
