The New Museum in New York City announced that Netherlands-based architecture firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) will design a 50,000-square-foot expansion to the museum’s existing building designed by Japanese architecture firm Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA.

“I’m particularly excited that our first public building in New York City will be for the New Museum, one of the most forward-thinking institutions for which I’ve always had a great affinity,” said OMA partner Rem Koolhaas, Hon. FAIA, in a press release. “Having collaborated with Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa on a number of projects in Europe, it is a real honor to stand alongside their great work of architecture, one of my favorites in the city.”

In September, the museum debuted the first phase of the project: two new galleries, designed by Gensler, in the ground floor of 231 Bowery, an adjacent property that the museum purchased in 2008. First announced in 2016, the expansion project at 231 Bowery will provide new galleries as well as improve circulation. “The design will be in development over the next eight months and details of the design and program will be shared at the conclusion of the design development phase,” a museum spokesperson told ARCHITECT via email.
