SFMOMA Gives the Press a Preview of its New Expansion

On May 14, the newly reconfigured and expanded San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will open the public. After three years of construction, the new 10-story addition designed by Snøhetta has be filled with the museums’ celebrated collection and provide a connection to Mario Botta’s original Postmodern building, which was completed in 1988. This expansion by the celebrated Oslo, Norway- and New York-based firm provides SFMOMA with an additional 170,000 square feet of new and renovated galleries, both indoor and outdoor. In doing so, it allows for the Bay Area museum to display more if its modern and contemporary pieces. To encourage the community to visit, the museum sanctioned free access to 45,000 square feet of the bottom two floors, and committed to free admission for visitors younger than 18.

To build anticipation for its opening day, the museum gave a preview to members of the press today.
