A total of 23 buildings were involved in the design/build delivery of the Federal Bureau of Prison’s (FBOP) first federal correctional institution (FCI) and satellite camp to be certified LEED Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council. GRW (Lexington, Ky.) architects and engineers led the design team in conjunction with the contractor, which was a joint venture between Caddell (Montgomery, Ala.) and Yates (Philadelphia, Miss.) for the $192 million project, which has a gross building area of approximately 665,889 square feet and is located on a 307-acre greenfield site in Aliceville, Ala. More than 92 percent of the construction waste, including scrap wood, concrete, cardboard, plastic, etc., totaling more than 15,145,300 pounds (7,573 tons) of construction waste—equal to the weight of more than 4,500 pickup trucks—was diverted from landfills.
