MVRDV has broken ground on Valley, a 807,293-square-foot, mixed-use building, with an abundant landscape, in Amsterdam’s central business district, Zuidas. The building—which won a 2015 local design competition for the development of the plot—will house both residential and commercial spaces, and is set to be completed in 2021.
Designed in collaboration with developer OVG Real Estate, the structure is made up of four intersecting volumes: a base for commercial and office spaces, topped with three towers (or “peaks”) of varying heights, which house residential apartments. A landscaped center (or “valley”), which is accessible to the public, surrounds the central tower on the fourth and fifth levels. Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf designed the outdoor public area, as well as the building’s roof gardens—intended to remain green year-round.
The structure will include multi-family residences, offices, shops, underground parking, as well as a sky bar at the top of its tallest peak (at 328 feet tall).
“Valley combines residential apartments with a green environment that offers panoramic views of Amsterdam,” said Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV, in a press release by the firm. “There will be many terraces, both private and public, filled with people, flowers, plants, and outdoor seating.”
