A consortium of four teams, HDR | TMK, JSWD Architects, Sander Hofrichter Architects, and TSJ Architects, will modernize the University Klinikum of Schelswig-Holstein’s (UKSH) Kiel and Lübeck campuses in Germany. The $1.9 billion renovation effort will be divided between the two campuses, with Sander + TSJ at Lübeck, and HDR | TMK + JSWD at Kiel. All four teams will be part of BAM/VAMED, an entity designated to construct the facilities as well as operate and maintain them until 2044.

The renovations at the Kiel campus will include refreshing the existing health and research buildings, preserving the campus’s historic structures, and constructing a new main entrance. The work will centralize the 21 scattered clinics into a singular 1.3 million-square-foot facility.

Plans for the campus call for low rise buildings to “integrate with—rather than loom over—the landscape”, according to a press release. The brick-clad bases of the buildings are designed to blend with the surrounding traditional, architectural style of Northern Germany. The classic bases are juxtaposed with a modernist, cubic exterior in white hues with green accents. New glass walls and expansive skylights will allow for natural light.

As one of the largest academic medical centers in Europe, UKSH aims to direct healthcare innovation and research to new heights. Both campus remodels are estimated for completion in 2021.
