Herzog & de Meuron’s Elbphilharmonie Hamburg Announces January 2017 Opening

The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, a decade-long project by Herzog & de Meuron, has released a schedule of opening concerts to be held in January 2017. Situated on the bank of Hamburg, Germany’s Elbe river, the Elbphilharmonie’s glass-enclosed concert halls rest upon a historic former tea and cocoa warehouse. Program within the Elbphilharmonie includes three concert halls, a music education area, a hotel, and the Plaza—a public viewing area 37 meters (121 feet) above ground level, between the old building and the new.

Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron collaborated with local firm Höhler + Partner on the design, which won German parliamentary approval in 2007. Using the existing cocoa warehouse as a foundation for the new structure, Herzog & de Meuron extruded the shape of the warehouse vertically, but distinguish new from old by wrapping the addition in curved glass panels, with an undulating glass roof rising at to 110 meters (361 feet) at its apex.

The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra will inaugurate the new venue with opening concerts on January 11 and 12, 2017.
