Construction of The Shed is making significant progress. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Rockwell Group, the new center for the arts in New York City will be located along the city’s High Line and won’t be completed until 2019. However, the New York Times has shared a few short video clips that demonstrate the 200,000-square-foot structure’s dynamic, movable features, while under construction.
Alex Poots, founding chief executive and artistic director of The Shed—who also worked on the Manchester International Festival and the Park Avenue Armory—is in charge of programming the building, which features an Industrially-inspired steel outer shell that can be detached and extended over an adjacent plaza via rollers on a track. The additional space doubles the structure’s indoor area, thereby creating a temperature-controlled venue, which can hold an audience of up to 2,700. When the shell is not deployed, the plaza acts as a public space for outdoor programs.
Upon its completion, The Shed will be a venue for a range of performance and visual art shows, installations, and exhibitions.
