State chapter AIA Maryland announced its 2016 Excellence in Design Awards, recognizing 25 award-winning projects. The submissions come from a pool of 129 entries from 63 firms belonging to AIA Maryland members from across Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia.
The jury selected 25 sites to be given either an Honor, Merit, or Citation award. There was also a special award, dubbed the Public Building of the Year, which went to local firm Hord Coplan Macht’s Green Street Academy in Baltimore. For this year’s Student Awards Program, the jury gave 10 awards and citations out of a total of 74 submissions.
To avoid bias and over familiarity, the jury was comprised of AIA Kentucky architects. The panel included jury chair Richard Polk, AIA, principal of EOP Architects, split between Lexington and Lousiville, Ky.; Susan Stokes Hill, AIA, principal at Tate Hill Jacobs Architects in Lexigton, Ky.; Michael Jacobs, AIA, design principal at Lexington, Ky.-based Omni Architects; Gregory Luhan, AIA, associate dean of administration and professor of architecture at the University of Kentucky College of Design in Lexington, Ky.; and Jeffrey Rawlins, AIA, design principal at Louisville firm Architectural Artisans.
