Four affordable housing projects have been selected for awards by the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Housing and Custom Residential Knowledge Community and the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The 2010 AIA/HUD Secretary Awards recognize excellence in affordable housing architecture, neighborhood and participatory design, and accessibility.
The 2010 AIA/HUD Secretary Awards winners are:
Excellence in Affordable Housing Design—Paseo Senter at Coyote Creek, San Jose, Calif., by David Baker + Partners Architects.
Creating Community Connection Award—Arbor Lofts, Lancaster, Calif., by PSL Architects.
Community-Informed Design Award—Congo Street Green Initiative, Dallas, by building community WORKSHOP.
Housing Accessibility – Alan J. Rothman Award—Madrona Live/Work, Seattle, by Tyler Engle Architects.
Each an excellent example of design’s importance in affordable housing and community development, the winners of the 2010 AIA/HUD Secretary Awards were selected by a jury of industry practitioners and design experts. Jury members were Andrew V. Porth, AIA, Porth Architects; Natalye Appel, FAIA, Natalye Appel + Associates Architects; Geoffrey Goldberg, AIA, G. Goldberg and Associates; Grace Kim, AIA, Schemata Workshop; Jane Kolleeny, Architectural Record and GreenSource; Luis F. Borray, Assoc. AIA, HUD; and Regina C. Gray, Ph.D., HUD.
