A brand new Science Education & Research Facility has been added to Santa Monica, Calif. –based Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences.
The 25,000-square-foot science facility, designed by Santa Monica-based architecture firm Frederick Fisher and Partners, will be a landmark for the k-12 college preparatory school. First started in Feb. 2014, the science building was completed this summer, and is ready to serve upper-and-middle-school students.

The building is a blend of concrete structures and glass facades, offering a sense of openness and modernity. There are a total of 12 science classrooms, three faculty prep rooms, a fume-hood lab, and a Projects Pavilion that features a rooftop living laboratory. A large area outside on the ground floor also provides social space for both students and faculty.

A combination of art and science elements, flows throughout the building. On the walls of the Project Pavilion various fossils serve as decoration, including a shark tooth that dates back to nearly 30 million years ago.

The facility, which has met the national standard of sustainability, features energy generating photovoltaic panels that are embedded into a glass curtain wall. A stormwater filtration system, recycled denim insulation, LED lights, and energy-efficient plumbing are also integrated into the building, contributing to an sustainable environment shared across the school.
