Smart homes are growing in popularity, but most sit on the scale at high-end custom homes with lengthy construction times and focus on features that make life simpler, but not necessarily sustainable. Architect Aitor Iturralde Martín diverged from the smart home status quo with home design in Serra d’Espadà, Spain that is focuses intelligence on energy efficiency and took just 10 days to assemble.
The family retreat in the mountains has a built in system that monitors outdoor conditions and weather in real-time, automating the energy consumption. The sensor-based system optimizes indoor comfort based on exterior conditions and enables analysis of home performance through data collected by a central home automation switchboard. Other green features built into the home include incorporation passive-house construction standards, a heat recovery ventilation system, and insulation made from wood fiber, recycled cotton, and sheep wool.
