The 2015 Sony World Photography Awards announced its shortlist on Tuesday. This year’s competition received the most entries ever—173,444 from 171 countries, a 24 percent increase from 2014. Currently on its eighth year, the competition is judged anonymously by experts from the World Photographic Academy, which promotes the advancement of photography.

Below are a few of ARCHITECT staff favorites from the shortlisted entries, which span professional, open, and youth categories. The panel will announce each categories’ winners on April 23rd.
