On Monday, the University of Pennsylvania School of Design announced the receipt of a alumni gift that will create two new annual awards—one fellowship for graduate students and one award for professionals. Lori Kanter Tritsch, a New York designer who earned an M.Arch. from PennDesign, and William Lauder, the executive chairman of the Estée Lauder Companies and also a University of Pennsylvania graduate, have pledged a $1.25 million gift to the school. These funds will establish the Kanter Tritsch Prize in Energy and Architectural Innovation (open to second-year M.Arch. students) and the Kanter Tritsch Medal for Excellence in Architecture and Environmental Design (given to an “under-recognized architect who has changed the course of design history,” according to a PennDesign press release). The first winners of the two awards will be announced in the fall of 2018.
