The winner of the 2010 Buckminster Fuller Challenge is Operation Hope, a land-management project that seeks to restore parched grasslands and savannahs in Zimbabwe.
On June 2, Operation Hope was awarded a $100,000 prize to support its work at a ceremony at the National Press Club, in Washington, D.C.
Operation Hope is a project of the Africa Centre for Holistic Management in Zimbabwe and its sister organization, the Savory Institute in Albuquerque, N.M. The project emphasizes a balance between plant growth and the behavior of herding animals and seeks to restore biodiversity, increase crop yields, and combat climate change.
Watergy, based in Berlin, was named runner-up. The other four finalists were Barefoot College, BK Farmlands, UrbanLab, and the Living Building Challenge.
Sponsored by the Buckminster Fuller Institute, the annual Buckminster Fuller Challenge recognizes initiatives that take a far-reaching design approach to advance the health of humans and the environment.
