MoMA PS1, an exhibition space in Long Island City affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, hosts an annual summer Warm Up series featuring experimental music and DJs from around the world. This year, the event is set to exhibit an installation by the Mexico City-based Escobedo Soliz Studio. The firm recently won the 17th annual Young Architects Program, a competition to redesign the PS1 courtyard with a water feature, a shading system, and seating for guests during hot summer months. Their winning interactive installation is called, “Weaving the Courtyard,” which includes a wading pool and a sunshade of multicolored, interwoven ropes connected to the concrete walls via tie-holes .
Warm Up 2016 will take place every Saturday from June 11, through Aug. 27. Expect “rotating stage environments by young, emerging design talent—including Anous and Arnold, Mimi Bai, Bittertang, CONFETTISYSTEM, Nitemind, Sit and Read and Justin Sloane,” says the institution’s latest press release. The musical line up includes:
– Danny Krivit, was inspired by his job as a kid at the New York bar “The Ninth Circle,” where he met musicians like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and Yoko Ono. He began his DJ career in the early 1970s, and has since become a legend for his innovative work with dance music.
– DJ Drama is well known as a performer and producer. He has worked with artists like 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, and Meek Mill.
– Nancy Whang is a singer/keyboardist who works with rock band LCD Soundsystem and the disco-house duo The Juan MacLean. She is an influential vocalist in the alternative dance music scene.
– Maya Jane Coles recently released her album titled, “Comfort,” and has performed at the Tate Modern in London. As a DJ and a producer, she conducts the entire production process of her work.
– Artist Yulan Grant, otherwise known as SHYBOI (of #KUNQ the queer artist collective), is from Jamaica and moved to America to further her interest in the dynamics of Caribbean and American culture. Her multi-disciplinary work is thematically concentrated on the identity, history, and power relations of the people within these regions.
