For 25 years, Hélène Binet has captured the stylings of esteemed architectural avant-gardes including Zaha Hadid, Hon. FAIA, Daniel Libeskind, AIA. and Peter Zumthor, Hon. FAIA. This month, she will be honored with the Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award, presented by Woodbury University. The award will be complemented with a month-long exhibition titled Hélène Binet: Fragments of Light at WUHO Gallery in Los Angeles. Co-curated by Binet and managing director of the institute Emily Bills, the exhibition will feature selected works by Binet, including her iconic photographs of Zumthor’s Therme Vals and Hadid’s Phaeno Science Center.

Binet shoots exclusively with analog. “[She] is an advocate of using film over digital methods, developing exquisite prints that reflect a deep concentration on the production of each image,” Bills says.

Her photographs— grayscale juxtapositions of shadowed, fragmented structures highlighted by cool slivers of light—emphasizes the relationships and interactions between natural light and structures. “The sense of the light, the sense of coming out of the dark, it’s something that stays very much in the way I photograph,” Binet said in a release.

Binet will be honored with the Shulman award at the exhibition’s opening reception on Feb. 28. Previous recipients include Iwan Baan and Pedro E. Guerrero.
