The European Commission and the Fundaci贸 Mies van der Rohe revealed five finalists for the biennial Mies van der Rohe Award鈥攁lso known as the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture鈥攁t a London press conference today. The finalists were selected from a shortlist of 40 projects. Over the coming weeks, jury members will visit and assess each of these five projects before recognizing one winner for its excellence in its conceptual, social, cultural, and technical ideas and construction.

The prize was launched in 1988, and became the official architecture prize of the European Union in 2001. The winner will be announced on May 8 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona.
The jury for this year鈥檚 prize includes practicing architects Cino Zucchi (chair) of Cino Zucchi Architetti; Margarita Jover of Aldayjover Architecture and Landscape; Lene Tranberg of, Lundgaard & Tranberg; Peter L. Wilson of Bolles + Wilson; Li Xiangning, deputy dean of Tongji University鈥檚 College of Architecture & Urban Planning in Shanghai; Tony Chapman, head of awards at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA); Hansj枚rg M枚lk, CEO of MPreis; and non-voting members Ivan Blasi and Giovanna Carnevali, director of the Fundaci贸 Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona.
