AIA Dallas announced its 47th annual design awards, which featured a range of projects such as hospitals, schools, residences, playhouses, and park pavilions. The five projects within the built design awards were recognized for their proven ability to respond to context and community. The jury, which included Coleman Coker of buildingstudio; Anne Fougeron, FAIA, of Fougeron Architecture; and Wendy Evans Joseph, FAIA, of Cooper Joseph Studio, considered more than 60 entries for this category alone. Their final selections were based on the design’s program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique.

The built project that received the jury commendation was “2_Plex” by NIMMO, a Dallas-based firm specializing in sustainable, modern architecture, founded by Joshua Nimmo, AIA. The jury appreciated both its innovation and how the concept could be repeated in a residential area in downtown Dallas. The project’s structure simultaneously allows for privacy and natural light, but still maintains the density of an urban neighborhood.
