The Royal Institute of Architects (RIBA) has named a new award in honor of the late U.S.–born modernist architect and 2018 RIBA Gold medalist Neave Brown, who passed away last January. The Neave Brown Award for Housing “recognizes the best new example of affordable housing in the U.K.,” according to the organization’s website.

“It is an honor to announce a new, very special RIBA award dedicated to the late Neave Brown. Neave’s contribution to housing will not be forgotten,” RIBA president Ben Derbyshire, Hon. AIA, said in a press release. “He was a passionate pioneer who sought radical housing solutions to improve the lives of the local communities he served, and much can be learnt from his work.”

The Neave Brown Award for Housing is part of the annual RIBA Awards process—judged first for Regional Awards, then National Awards, and finally the Stirling Prize. To qualify for this year’s program, a project must be “a winner of the 2019 RIBA Regional Award, [feature] 10 or more homes completed and occupied between Nov. 1, 2016 and Feb. 1, 2019, [include] one-third [affordable] housing, … [and] demonstrate evidence of meeting the challenge of housing affordability.”
A shortlist of six projects will be selected on July 25, and a winner will be announced at the RIBA Stirling Prize ceremony in October.
