Everyone knows about the inspirational work that Habitat for Humanity has achieved in building more than 500,000 affordable homes and housing more than 2.5 million people throughout the world since 1976.
Fewer people know that Habitat builds to a documented sustainability standard it conveys to its affiliates that covers community design and planning, home design criteria, site development, resource stewardship (including materials, energy, and water efficiency), indoor air quality, durability, and operations and maintenance. And with this mission, Habitat has become one of the largest green builders in the industry.

But even fewer green building professionals may be aware that Habitat operates more than 750 ReStore resale outlets in the United States that take in donations of reusable building materials and products—helping to divert thousands of tons of materials from landfills every year across the country. Some of the locations even provide deconstruction services.

“Not only can we help organizations reach their sustainability goals,” says Drew Meyer, Habitat’s senior director of ReStore and Gifts in Kind Support, “but the funds generated by the sale of these donations help Habitat build homes, communities, and hope.”
