PEOPLE: installer, Boone Brothers Roofing, Olathe, Kan., and architect, Gould Evans Associates, Lawrence, Kan.GREEN POINTS: Administrators at Washburn University were attracted to vegetated roofing when considering a new roofing solution to top 7,000 square feet (650 m2) of a 15,000-square-foot (1394-m2) addition to Stoffer Hall, the university’s science center. The roof system consists of an organic base sheet; waterproofing membrane, which incorporates post-consumer tire and glass, as well as postindustrial boiler slag; drainage layer and root barrier. Plantings of low-growing, climate-hearty sedums are rooted in a layer of lightweight soil. Mineral flashings finish the roof perimeters. The same waterproofing membrane that is part of the green roof was applied to the non-vegetated roof sections. A flood coat embedded with a gravel surface provides protection from UV rays, foot traffic, fire and other elements.
