Project Description

Community Mediation Services is a nonprofit organization that promotes peaceful conflict resolution, a solution-oriented alternative to the courts and penal system. The design for this new center lends dignity and calm to a process that is typically fraught with anxiety. A supportive community atmosphere unites conference rooms with a meandering flexible space for waiting, lounging, meeting and dining, encouraging interaction and kinship. The vibrant urban character of the surrounding Jamaica neighborhood inspired a colorful choice of materials. Concrete floors, storefront walls and billboard-like panels are durable and familiar. Furnishings are brightly colored, quirky, and sculptural. Posters and graffiti messages are referenced on wall surfaces where words from the CMS mission statement intermix with the architecture making this a unique memorable place.
