Project Description

The house was designed for an Argentinian family who expressed their wish for an indoor/outdoor “parrilla” (burning wood stove) which was to be the focus of their lifestyle. They explained that they would use the parrilla while entertaining as well as in the privacy of their everyday living. Hence, the parrilla space serves as the heart of the house. It extends into a front porch and the rear terrace when the weather permits it and the sliders are fully open both to the East and the West. It affords an experience of space that expands from the front water feature to the views of the intracoastal waterway in the rear. Visible from the front vestibule as well as the living dining room, the parrilla is accessible from both the public and private areas of the house. A steel automatic door exposes the parrilla when in use. In addition to the parrilla, the clients wished for a more private kitchen that would be fully integrated with an outdoor terrace. Behind the parrilla wall, the more private section of the house is accessible through a pivot glass door. The kitchen consists of the cook top and oven wall, placed behind the same stone wall as the parrilla. Most of the storage is hidden behind the two wood paneled walls. Fully integrated subzero refrigerator, freezer, wine cooler and garage for small appliances are all hidden behind the Millwork. In addition, the preparation island and the counter island are both fully open towards the covered terrace on the West. Similar to the parrilla, when the sliders are open, the kitchen is fully integrated with the expansive outdoor terrace to maximize the potential of subtropical outdoor living. The aesthetics for both the parrilla and the kitchen are derived from the modern aesthetic of the house.
