On Nov. 16, after an eight-day transformation, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe‘s Barcelona Pavilion reopened to the public with a temporary all-white new look. Dubbed “Mies Missing Materiality,” the artistic installation, designed by local architecture firm Anna & Eugeni Bach (A&EB), was a full scale re-dressing of the building using white vinyl panels. “This simple act … opens the door to multiple interpretations about aspects like the value of the original, the role of the white surface as an image of modernity, and the importance of materiality in the perception of space,” said A&EB in a press release by Fundació Mies van der Rohe.

On Nov. 27, the panels will be taken down and the pavilion will be restored to its original “materiality” the next day.
As part of the “Pavilion Interventions” series, the Fundació invites various artists, architects, and designers to temporarily alter the pavilion. Previously, among others, Ai Weiwei (in 2009) and Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA (in 2011) have transformed the pavilion.
