New York–based nonprofit Van Alen Institute and Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership announced the winner of the fourth edition of the Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition which will be built in Manhattan. Future Expansion Architects, a firm based in Brooklyn, was selected out of eight finalist teams to install a temporary structure at the conjunction of Fifth Avenue and 23rd St.
Dubbed “Flatiron Reflection,” the project, above all, offers new perspectives of the triangular, 22-story building which change based on the observer’s proximity to the installation. Inspired by the “columnar organization” of the landmarked site, “Flatiron Reflection” is comprised of several mirrored tubes forming a fluted exterior that opens up into a semicircle which patrons can stand and interact with inside while still appreciating the built environment. “The conical interior form cuts out the visual noise of the city to isolate the image of the Flatiron Building and its neighbors on the skyline,” according to a press release. A matte white finish covers lower half of the installation’s perimeter, absorbing light and shadow.

“The installation is designed for three scales of experience: the deeply creased exterior makes spaces for individuals; the interior room offers an intimate panorama for small groups; and the north-facing wedge presents a platform toward the plaza. We hope that the installation opens new possibilities for interaction and experiences while reinforcing the pure public essence of the site,” said Deirdre McDermott, AIA, and Nicholas McDermott, partners at Future Expansion.

“Flatiron Reflection” opens on Nov. 20 and will be on view through the New Year’s Day.
