The University of Notre Dame School of Architecture in Notre Dame, Ind., has named Stefanos Polyzoides as its new dean, effective July 1. Co-founder the Washington D.C.–based nonprofit Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) and co-founding partner of the Pasadena, Calif.–based firm Moule & Polyzoides Architects and Urbanists, Polyzoides succeeds Michael Lykoudis, FAIA, who will step down and resume teaching after 16 years as dean.
“Stefanos brings to Notre Dame an international reputation for architectural work informed by tradition and moral purpose,” said Notre Dame president Rev. John Jenkins in an university press release. “He brings together design, the realities of urban living and sustainable development to produce buildings that serve communities and humanity. His leadership will enrich our School of Architecture.”
Born in Athens, Greece, Polyzoides received his B.Arch. and M.Arch. from Princeton University. After moving to Southern California in 1973, he co-founded the firm Moule & Polyzoides, Architects and Urbanists in 1982 alongside his wife and partner, Elizabeth Moule, AIA, helping develop an international practice with over 700 projects around the world. In 1993, Polyzoides, Moule, and four other co-founders created the CNU, an organization with more than 3,000 members focused on promoting architectural and urban planning through integrated development. From 1973 to 1996, Polyzoides served as a faculty member for the University of Southern California School of Architecture.
“I am deeply honored to have been chosen by Notre Dame to be the next dean of its School of Architecture,” Polyzoides said in the same release. “In recent years, I have come to believe that this may well be the single institution in our country that prepares its students to address the diverse acute needs of our time. Not satisfied with teaching skills alone, the school professes an architecture and urbanism that is centered on human values, personal responsibility and community contribution.”
