At a ceremony last night in Chicago, it was announced that Common Unity in Mexico City, by Rozana Montiel Estudio de Arquitectura, is the winner of this year’s Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize for emerging architecture, MCHAP.emerge.
The project is an insertion in a 7,000-person housing complex, adding community-oriented features like climbing nets and blackboards. “Montiel took areas that were left over and underused, filled with trash and lean-tos, and used the simplest of means to turn them into places for the community,” ARCHITECT columnist Aaron Betsky wrote earlier this month.
The jury for this years award was comprised of chair Ricky Burdett of LSE Cities and the Urban Age Programme in London; Jose Castillo of Arquitectura 911sc in Mexico City; Ron Henderson of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago; Rodrigo Pérez de Arce of the Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Estudios Urbanos, Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile; and Claire Weisz, FAIA, of WXY in New York.
