Project Description

FROM THE ARCHITECTS:

This family of five came across a large, virtually single-level home oriented around a protected outdoor living area with a pool. Initially attracted to these aspects, the home had all of the basic programmatic elements they were looking for, it just needed to be reworked aesthetically.

What began as a minor cosmetic remodel quickly turned into a full "gut" remodel. And while the majority of the "shell" was preserved, every interior surface and a large number of partitions were reworked.

Reconfiguring the interior walls produced the desired modern open floor plan concept. Creating a strong connection to the outdoors accomplished the goal of uniting the protected and private rear yard with the living spaces inside.

What was once a drab, traditional interior was quickly stripped down to a few basic modern elements – trim was minimized, and walls and ceilings were treated to a single tone of white, allowing the natural wood door openings and panels as well as the client's art collection to stand out. The use of one species of wood – horizontally oriented, rift-sawn white oak – was selected for all exposed millwork to maintain unity throughout the home. Milestone was used as a seamless floor finish in formal areas, transitioning to wide plank white ash in family areas and bedrooms to create more warmth.

Landscape design ensured a seamless transition from interior to exterior. Milestone floors and ipe deck wrapping were some of the elements that created a smooth transition between spaces.”
