Project Description

Builder’s Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist

The major objectives for this home included ADA accessibility to accommodate a wheelchair-bound child, promotion of an active indoor/outdoor lifestyle, and building in the most environmentally friendly manner possible.

The house is laid out on a single level (with the exception of the wine and exercise rooms, located on a lower level) and is arranged around a large rear courtyard. Ramp access at front door, wide hallways and doorways throughout, two ADA-compliant bathrooms, and a lowered section of countertop in the kitchen help meet accessibility needs.

To maximize natural light, the floorplan is divided into three distinct components overlooking the main courtyard. This configuration, with its narrow massing, also allows for abundant cross ventilation, and takes advantage of the site’s solar exposure, both actively and passively. Deep sunshade/trellis features create outdoor living spaces while controlling heat gain and glare.

The house incorporates a whole-systems approach to its energy use, incorporating photovoltaic panels (10.8 KW –engineered to zero-out the home’s electricity bill), solar thermal, and a geothermal heat pump system.
