Project Description
This student project was completed in School Without Classrooms: Micro-Weather Futures of Education Technology, a studio course at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation which won a Sloan Award in the 2016 ARCHITECT Studio Prize competition.
FROM THE PROJECT TEAM:
This primary school is designed for kinesthetic learning, defined as movement through space as stimuli for learning. Thermal classroom furniture, utilizing embedded radiant heading and cooling, augment the atmosphere of interior space at the human scale. Their shelf life defines program, lasting only as long as their heat capacity. Objects augmented by these thermal systems become architecture, creating their own atmosphere and interior urbanism. This scalar ambiguity between architecture and object enables the new classroom to exist as a landscape for truly exploratory learning.
