AIA Announces New Honorary Members

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced eight additions to its honorary membership, which represents professionals who are not eligible for full membership because they are not architects or designers but have provided service to the profession in some way or have served a minimum of 10 years with the AIA at either the national or branch level. The new honorary members for 2016, listed below, represent fields including marketing and communications, urban development, clinical psychiatry, and government.

Mindy Thompson Fullilove, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, studies the effect of urban renewal on psychological health within cities, and has served as the “moral compass” of the AIA’s board of directors and its strategic council, according to the press release.

Mark Cameron, principal consultant at Cameron MacAllister Group, has advised firms such as ZGF Architects, Olson Kundig, and Eskew+Dumez+Ripple on marketing strategies.

Phil Simon, managing director of marketing and promotion at AIA National in Washington, D.C., has worked for nearly 20 years in strategic communications for the AIA.

Terri Stewart, vice president of practice and knowledge at AIA National, has contributed to efforts including member engagement and raising awareness about the Instiute among constituent groups.

Melissa Hunt leads the AIA Central Oklahoma chapter and is a councilwomen in Moore City, Okla., where her focuses include tornado recovery and serving on the city’s planning commission board.

Tim Thomas is program director of the Cleworth Architectural Legacy Project, a flagship program sponsored by The Denver Architectural Foundation, which takes architects into elementary classrooms in the Denver Public Schools system to teach children about architecture.

Ann Casso, executive director of the AIA Trust, has made it easier to access and use the Institute’s resources on practice topics such as starting a firm, supporting interns and new architects, succession planning, and providing healthcare.

Paula Wallace is the president and co-founder of the Savannah College of Art and Design, in Savannah, Ga. She has helped garner attention to and support for Savannah’s historic preservation efforts, which have been recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
